Study confirms online vision tests with dynamic optotypes are comparable to traditional methods

Posted on

Online visual acuity testing using the Dyop dynamic optotype is as accurate and reliable as traditional LogMAR testing, making it a viable option for remote eye assessments in both non-presbyopic and presbyopic individuals, according to a study.

Dyop is a dynamic optotype designed to reflect real-world visual tasks more closely than traditional charts.

The research compared virtual Dyop testing with standard LogMAR charts in both non-presbyopic (ages 18–39) and presbyopic (ages 40–60) adults.

In the study, 110 participants completed online VA assessments via Zoom, using remote access software to view the testing platform. Each participant underwent 3 consecutive VA measurements using both Dyop and LogMAR charts in a counter-balanced design.

There was a strong positive correlation between Dyop and LogMAR scores across all age groups, with no significant differences in measurements. The small mean differences observed were statistically insignificant.

Researchers concluded that online VA testing using Dyop is both feasible and clinically consistent with traditional methods, supporting its use in telemedicine settings for both younger and older adults.
